YouTube Time Machine

Mr Magoo. Go Go Gophers. Under Dog. Tennessee Tuxedo. Last night, I easily spent the best two hours of my entire week watching some of the best cartoons ever made. When I was in second grade, my teacher Mrs. Mitchell, asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. Matter of factually, I told her Under Dog. I think I am going to go buy some Cap’n Crunch now.  Read More

First Snow of the Season

Visiting Keystone resort’s website yesterday, I happened to notice the 1/2 inch of snowfall that had melted by noon. The webcam had the usual downward shot of Mozart in a layer of pretty white fluff. You could still see the dirt it was a nice vision of what is to come.  Read More

Tony Franklin

Thanks to my friend Paul, I have a renewed interest in the fretless playing of Tony Franklin. Tony has played bass for a lot of people but most notably for Jimmy Page’s The Firm and Blue Murder. He is known for introducing fretless bass to hard rock and metal audiences. I decided to look Tony Franklin up on YouTube and sure enough, I found the following clip. It is a really beautiful solo arrangement of Led Zeppelin’s, The Rain Song. The video is a bit shaky, so if... Read More

Daycare Pestilence

Nothing rocks the core of your mortality better than a good virus. Call me dramatic, but the last couple of days have seen me sicker than I have been since I last had the flu in 1996. I used to go a year or two at a time without so much as catching a cold but now that our son attends daycare, we are averaging a new cold every two weeks. How I miss those days. In my fever addled stupor, I have coined the term Daycare Pestilence. I know it is mine because there is not a single search... Read More

Brio Toys

Maybe the paint isn’t quite as delicious as sweet chewy lead, but the brightly colored classics from Brio are sure to be a hit with your youngster (warning: the site is always remarkably slow to load for some reason). Elegant and free from the stupefying effect of contemporary Wal-Mart fare, Brio toys are as fun for desginers as they are for little crumb munchers. Buy a train set today... Read More

Sweet Sweet September is the time of year that Winter Sports stores start stocking the shelves with all kinds of lovely skiing goodies. Summer is currently choking on its death rattle. Come on, Winter. Get here already!  Read More

CS3 Blazes

Finally, after much procrastination and penny pinching, I finally took the plunge and loaded Adobe CS3. It absolutely blazes compared to the old version running under Rosetta (my old CS version was not Universal Binary). Running filters on 20 MB images are speedy and load times on all programs are finally bearable.  Read More

Confessions of a Change Agent

(originally posted 7/25/2004 but re-posted for a friend) Getting management at any large corporation to change to a radically new process can be a daunting challenge. Getting a highly successful commercial site with millions of registered users to change from table-based design to CSS/XHTML design based on web standards is almost impossible. The trick is to use reasons that those wearing the suits will listen to. Here is the path to success: Enlist the help of your fellow designers... Read More
